After re-install apps slow to load - same config

Hi there, I have a flake/hm config used with multiple systems. I had been using this config for quite a while with modules shared between systems.

I have a laptop that was working fine (config wise), but I needed to reinstall nixos, and now for some reason the same config, on the same machine is having issues.

They largest being some apps take forever to start. I “think” it could be electron related. Apps like chromium, vscode, etc. Wheras apps like console (terminal), gnome web, nautilus are speedy.

Running gnome.

Not much to go on, for me. Any logs?

+1 on this, facing such delays after a recent reinstall too, 6/10 times the apps take ~1-5 seconds longer to start. kinda breaks the flow when even the terminal takes considerable time to run a basic command oof.
i am on Gnome Wayland w Nvidia

I can’t believe it… It was a Gnome Extension.

I guess the takeaway is - to be conscious that extensions that modify app appearance can cause issues in unique ways. Meaning it works on one but not the other. Both systems and apps.

I am in the process of stripping out all non-essential extensions.

which extension was it?
and why did it not interfere before the reinstall?

In my case, it was unite.

I “think” because the system where it is working was layered up over time to the running config. Then, when I reloaded, I wondered if something was cleaned out or applied with a different order of operations. Not entirely sure.

If/when I reloaded the main system that was working, it would have likely inherited the issue. Regardless, I am not going to re-enable the extension. I want to run with fewer extensions to avoid odd behaviour. I was so frustrated that I was close to dropping nixos, as I needed to be able to get back to work.

But things seem to be stabilizing.
